So, it's been a while since I stick with Kamen Rider, sometimes Super Sentai, and never Ultraman. Ultraman was a big part of my childhood, but I'm not really remember Ultraman stuff I watched when I was a kid. The only thing I remember is, I like Ultraman, especially the first one. The design is so simple yet really heroic looking, at least from what I remember from the toys I used to have. Ultraman 80 was the one with catchy theme that I could remember, then goes Tiga, Gaia, and Cosmos. It was hard to watch Ultraman back then because I could only watch them on some tv channel that I can't access, and the airing time sometimes conflicted with my school time.
I'm not even sure why I don't watch Ultraman when the internet finally boomed and I could access any series on the internet. Probably because I was too interested with Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, and those alone already have a ton of episodes. So yeah, I was focused on watching Heisei era Kamen Rider and some of the Sentai that I am interested with the robot-- If the robots looks lame, I don't even bother watching the series, lol. Time goes by and the time has finally come, I'm not really interested in Zenkaiger, watching Revice weekly isn't enough. I wanted to watch Ultraman, but not sure what should I watch. I picked the most recent series that has been completed, Ultraman Z.
Say my name! Ultraman Z! It was really weird at first, but the opening theme song really made it cool and made the corniness vanished. The casts are pretty good and really easy to remember, I usually abandon a series if the casts or character don't click with me at the first episode. It was fun, the battle felt really different with Kamen Rider, since Ultraman and the monsters are big, it has a different view and feel since it's not taken at an actual place in the city like Kamen Rider usually do. The set always look really cool and on point, especially with the exploding stuff or buildings breaking. The story also felt pretty light hearted and has more good points for children, in almost every episode I could remember.
25 episodes goes by, and the series was ended. It was a good run, with each character given a pretty good screen time and story. I think I landed on a good one, since Ultraman Z also featured Ultraman from earlier series, even going back to the first Ultraman. So there are a lot of fanservice for old Ultraman fans like me, watching Gamma Future summoning Tiga, Gaia and Dyna was so amazing. I am also likely tired by 'another episode, another new form and gimmick' since Saber, and even Revice has that kind of thing too, but still okay since the story is actually interesting. But Ultraman Z has few forms, and not appeared just episode after episode, it was spread around the series with good rhythm so it's not just new form over and over again.
So yeah, Ultra Series turned out way better than I expected. I was expecting something that I probably won't like, and ended up liking it so much. After I finished Z, I was continue the Ultra journey to Orb & Orb Origins, Ginga & Ginga S, and currently watching Trigger while writing this thoughts. Now I understand why Ultraman is so popular, it is probably the best show for parents and their kids, unlike Kamen Rider & Super Sentai that I feel fitter for teenagers despite it is aimed for kids. If you love tokusatsu and don't watch Ultraman, start watching!
